Labeling Machine:The Ultimate Buying Guide
This new guide covers everything you should know about industrial labelling machines.
First, I’ll show you why labelling is more important than ever. Then, I’ll help you choose the right labeling machine after packaging your products.
By the way, have you read my guides on blister packing machines and cartooning machines?
Well, you need them – just bookmark the two. You can read them later.
Anyway, let’s come back to this:

What is a Labeling Machine?

It is a machine or equipment which dispenses, applies or prints different kinds of labels on a wide range of products, items, containers, and packages.
Alternatively, you may call it:
An equipment that affixes paper covers, labels or information on boxes, packages, bottles, etc.
The two still refer to the same equipment – industrial labeling machine.
But, that definition alone is not enough…
The question is – how does it achieve this?
Well, it is through a coordinated motion of various parts and components. And, therefore, a labelling machine is an assembly of parts that print, dispense or apply marking (labels) on items.
Look at these:

Figure 1 – Labels on products
Now, to get those writings and images on these products, you need a special machine such as this:

Figure 2 – A labeling machine
Of course, every company uses labels to decorate or give information to the consumer regarding their respective products.
For example, the labels contain stock and price information, batch and barcodes among others. I will show you why you need labels on your products later in chapter 2.
Again, I want you to note right away that labelling machines come in a range of shapes and designs. Some are fully automatic while others are semi-automatic.
Of course, this will determine their production capacity.
Also, I will take you the various types of labeling machines later in this guide.
Basically, all these variations depend on the kind of labeling process you want to perform.
But the truth is:
Most of the labeling machines are multipurpose. It is for this reason that they can label different materials such as:
- Plastic
- Aluminum
- Steel
- Glass
- Fiber drums, etc.
Don’t worry, I am going to explore all these details shortly. But before that, I want to take you through a very important subject:
Why Label Products in Manufacturing Processes

Look at any product around you:
Can you see some writings on it?
Well, that is what we call product labelling.
As I’ve told you earlier, companies and businesses use the labels as a way of:
- Branding
- Decorating
- Providing ideal information to the clients
Some manufacturers also label their products for shipping addresses, inventory control, and pricing.
Furthermore, product labeling plays a significant role in communicating with the consumers.
In most cases, different jurisdictions specify the types of labels they want on the products. They may state the size, color or any other information.

Figure 3 – Products Labeling
And it is for that reason that every new product in the market must adhere to the specific packaging and labeling policies.
2.1. Types of Products Labeling
Nearly all products available in the market use two types of labels:
- Removable labels
- Non-removable labels
You can know what they are just from the names.
Don’t worry about that – I am going to make it easy for you to understand.
2.1.1 Removable Labels
These are product labels with custom-made adhesives. They provide a safe and sound bonding to the surface material.
At the same time, you can still remove the tag from the surface material without necessarily leaving the residue of the adhesive.
This is vital because it makes it possible for you to prevent damaging the surface material or tearing the label.
Today, we have a wide range of adhesives. Thus, it becomes easy for removable labels to provide relatively light and temporary bonds.

Figure 4 – Removable label: Photo Credits – CILS
What’s more?
You can remove and re-use some of these product labels. However, you have to dig deeper into your pockets when buying removable labels since they’re a bit expensive.
But, the best part:
You can use removable labels on most of the surface materials. Ordinarily, the label adhesive should provide a peel, tack, and shear – allowing the adhesive to bond to the surface material.
But still, you need to know that most removable product labels aren’t effective in applications with exposure to:
- Cold
- Heat
- Moisture
- Corrosive materials.
Furthermore, comparatively rough surfaces allow for somewhat easy removal of these labels. However, such surfaces do not provide for a secure bond like the smooth surfaces.
With time, you’ll realize that the adhesive becomes difficult to remove since the labels start to act rather like permanent adhesive.
2.1.2 Non-removable Labels
Some people refer to this label as permanent labels. Typically, they’re designed for one-time application.
They come with strong resins which create a permanent bond between the label and the surface material. You can watch this video by Online Labels to understand what I am saying.
The extent of permanence lies on a combination of different aspects such as time, type of surface material, environment, adhesive, and application.
It is also vital to ensure that the adhesive you use for labeling also provides peel, tack, and shear. This enhances a secure bond to the surface as it continues to put up with various environmental conditions.
In many occasions, you will find that most stock labels use non-removable adhesives.
Additionally, if you remove these labels from the surface material, they will leave an adhesive residue. Chances are also high that the label may tear or pull the surface when removing it.
I hope you’ve seen that in the video above.
The truth is:
No label is entirely non-removable. What happens is that with time, the effectiveness of the adhesive diminishes.
With that in mind, let me take you a step further to discuss the importance of labeling products.
2.2 Importance of Labeling Products
Since time immemorial, the importance of labeling products has been unquestionable.
In this case, let us quickly go through some of these important reasons why manufacturers often tend to label their items;
2.2.1 Product Specification
Each product contains different specifications. It could come in different package and design, but the content in most cases also tends to vary.
So it is the product labeling that makes it easy for the manufacturer to provide the specifications regarding a particular product.

Figure 5 – Courtesy of Coca Cola
For instance, you will find that certain food products use similar packages but the grade differs. A better approach to differentiating these grades, therefore, is by labeling.
2.2.2 Product Identification
Ideally, product label is its primary identity. For a product to be outstanding in the market, it needs to have a particular identity.
It is this identity that distinguishes it from other similar items on the market.

Figure 6 – Photo Credits: Drugs
So, product labeling helps considerably in giving the product its unique identity. With labels, consumers can easily find what they are looking for.
Additionally, this method also gives the brand ability to describe the specific elements that the product contains.
2.2.3 Requirement by Law
In many countries, there is a law that mandates manufacturers to label their items for various reasons. Some of these product labeling policy directives revolve around:
- Ingredients
- Expiry date
- Batch number manufacturing plant
- Safety instructions among others.

Figure 7 – Photo Credits: BBC
Typically, some of these policy directives surrounding product labeling are always universal. So that you will find respective agencies implementing the labeling ratifications accordingly.
2.2.4 Product Promotion
This is the other importance of product labeling. Many businesses would always wish to record high sales turnover on their items.
So labeling the product in view of the appealing the customer to develop an interest in purchasing the same becomes a better approach.

Figure 8 – Photo Credits: Trending Packaging
It works, and I’m sure you’ve seen such labels on products, especially during festive and other popular seasons.
Promotional product labels create immediate attention of the customer. If you design it creatively and attractively, the product label can convert a potential customer.
2.2.5 Supplementary Information
At times, manufacturers may add extra information inform of labels. These allow customers to read and understand how to use a specific product effectively.
Here is a good example:

Figure 9 – Label on carton with instructions
Alternatively, the manufacturer may use labels as a means of differentiating its products from other competitors.
What’s the upshot here?
All these shows merely how significant the labeling machine is in the manufacturing process. You can’t just have a manufacturing plant without a labeling machine.
And it is the reason why you need to be critical and particular when it gets to choosing the ideal labeling machine for your product labeling needs.
Now let’s carry on and explore the different types of labeling machines.
Types of Label Printing Machines

There are many types of labeling equipment available on the market today. So basically, to get a better machine, you need to do a lot of research.
Like I promised, I am going to discuss everything you should consider in this article.
But the truth is:
You’ll find industrial labeling machines with simple to complex designs. Others will have more functionalities, whereas as some will have just a few.
But, by the end of the day, you need an industrial labeling machine that meets your unique performance specifications.
In this chapter, you’re going to learn about some of the most common types of label printing machines. They include:
3.1. Fully Automatic Label Applicator Machine
This type of labeling machine is mainly used for comparatively high capacity production. It comes with a conveyor belt which moves and positions the product for labeling.
It is useful when it comes to accurately placing the label on a product. This machine also allows for either full or partial labeling.
But, what’s unique about an automatic labeling machine?
In case there is a change in diameter during labelling, it automatically adjusts accordingly.

Figure 10 – A high speed labeling machine
It provides quality labeling irrespective of the material of the surface.
The point is:
If you need something that can handle bulk packaging, then a fully automatic labeling machine is a perfect alternative.
3.2. Semi-automatic Labeling Machine
This type of labeling machine is versatile and applies self-adhesive labels to containers with cylindrical and square shapes.
Also, you can use it to label bottles and containers that have reasonably low mechanical resistance pressure such as plastic bottles.
But in most cases, this type of labeling machine is often prevalent in environments that are slightly less hectic. This equipment can accommodate a full roll of labels with a diameter of up to 300mm.
What’s more?
The semi-automatic labeling machine can incorporate latest hi-tech container sensing system, stepper motor drive, and fiber optic label.

Figure 11 – A section of semi-automatic labeling equipment
The best part:
Semi-automatic labeling machine speeds up labeling capabilities are quite impressive, making it an ideal investment.
3.3. Vertical Labeling Machine
This labeling equipment is user-friendly and highly versatile. It can label up to around 150 containers per minute, which is actually dependent on the size of the label and container.
In most cases, this machine is used in the vertical labeling machine is suitable for containers with a cylindrical shape. It is also fully automatic hence preventing any instances of changing parts.

Figure 12 – Vertical labelling machine
Again, it features a roller spacing design which is essential in assembling the containers in the ideal positions.
The fact that is also accurate and requires minimal time to change over makes it worthy equipment for labeling solutions.
In general, it is worth noting that this machine a “workaholic”. So you can use it effectively to label different products on various surface materials.
3.4. Horizontal Label Printer Machine
This machine is ideal for partially or fully labeling unstable products.
It works by laying an item on its side. Then, the idler rollers that are mounted on attachment chains support it.
Apparently, this gives you the most accurate labeling results when branding products supported within the roller structure.

Figure 13 – horizontal labeling machine
The horizontal label printing machine can label approximately 100 containers per minute or more. It will depend on the capability of the labeling machine.
Definitely, this is a clear indication of how speedy this equipment is.
Nonetheless, it is user-friendly with a fully automated system.
3.5. Multi-function Labeling Machine
As the name suggests, you can use this machine to label a wide range of containers. Irrespective of the shape or even size.
Here’s the deal:
An interesting feature of this machine is that it can label bottles or containers. Of course, it can handle different shapes and sizes simultaneously.

Figure 14 – multi-function labeling machine
It’s actually fun working with it, and that is why its speed in unquestionably incredible. Again, the overall construction is hardy owing to the fact that it combines quite some strong materials.
The good news is:
As much as it looks and sounds complicated, it is so easy to operate it. Besides, it guarantees a high degree of accuracy regardless of the types, shapes, and sizes of containers you’re labeling concurrently.
It is also stable, which is ideally essential, especially in a relatively busy industry.
3.6. High-Speed Labeling Machine
Also called high capacity labeling machine, is an example of fully automatic equipment. In fact, most fully automatic labeling machines guarantee high capacity labeling process.
A number of high speed labeling machines, synchronize the label applicator together with the product handling conveyor. Therefore, it guarantees flexibility and efficiency in the labeling process.

Figure 15 – high speed labeling machine
The good thing about high speed labeling machines is that they have robust control systems. This guarantees low maintenance, rapid part changeover and high accuracy.
Ordinarily, the high-speed labeling machines are super-fast. Fast enough to reach the demands of high-speed labeling environments that at times get to 1000 labels per minute.
Also, this machine integrates the latest technology. Even at very high speeds, the labeling process is still accurate.
Isn’t that fantastic?
Another compelling feature of high-speed labeling machine is the design flexibility. It can handle different shapes and sizes of products.
And at the same time, it has to apply the labels consistently, rapidly and accurately.
This equipment has sensors that play an integral role in coordinating movements of different parts of high speed labeling machine.
In short, there are different types of labeling machines available in the market today. Depending on your specific needs, you can choose high capacity, vertical to horizontal labeling machine.
Main Parts of Labeling Machines

A labeling machine is an assembly of different parts and components. It is these parts that coordinate to:
- Move and arrange items from one position to another
- Print, apply or spray the label
- Detect wrong labels and reject them from the system, etc.
Of course, we cannot discuss all the components and parts of labeling machines. However, the main focus will be on the main parts.
As you will see in the video below, all these components work simultaneously during the labeling process.
Always remember:
As a rule of thumb, always refer to the technical manual of specific machine for more detailed specifications.
But again, why am I telling you all these?
Knowing these parts will help you understand the working principle of labeling machine. I will take you through that shortly.
Now let’s quickly look at some of these main components;
4.1. Feeding Hopper
In product labeling, accuracy is critical. You need a machine that distributes the label precisely, and this is something that starts straightaway from the feeding hopper.
Essentially, this component plays an integral role in the entire labeling process. It ensures that it feeds the items, e.g. ampoules on the machine for labeling.

Figure 16
This happens systematically and continuously which is vital because it enhances uniformity in the overall process.
It thus gives the operator a relatively easy time since ultimately, it prevents the vials and ampoules from breaking. Additionally, it eliminates the challenging and long aspect of loading products for labeling.
4.2. Date Printing Setting
Ideally, it is vital for products to include various dates revolving around it. For instance, date of manufacture, expiry, and batch number among others.
Certainly, these are different from the main label that you want to print on the surface of the container. Now, what happens is that most of the ultramodern labeling machines come with a setting that allows for this particular option.
So that you can choose whether or not to incorporate this particular information on the products’ surface.
In most cases, it’s always a requirement by many regulatory bodies to include the information on the product. Hence this setting is essential in any labeling machine.
4.3. Labeling Station (Labeling Head & labeling pad)
The labeling station is made of two primary components; the labeling head and the labeling pad. This station offers an ideal solution in situations where printing of labels on containers ineffective or impossible.
It is in this section that the controls facilitate simple incorporation of the broader production surrounding. Also, the labeling station has a characteristic of the clear display as well as the easy-to-learn operating process.

Figure 17
In most instances, the optional robotics controlled positioning system provides quick adjustment of labeling point.
It is crucial because it also reduces setup time, especially when different sizes of bottles need to be labeled.
4.4. Touch Screen Control Panel
Typically, modern labeling machines integrate a wide range of technological advancements. Considerably, it has been helpful especially in reducing operating costs and enhancing efficiency.

Figure 18
So for appropriate management of all the process, a control panel has to be present. This component is essential in this machine as it helps in controlling the automatic configuration of the machine’s module.
Ordinarily, the control panel performs a wide range of functions in a labeling machine and comes in different interfaces depending on the particular machine.
But the most critical element is to understand that the touch screen control panel allows you to alter or adjust considerations or production process.
Nonetheless, this panel also helps in alerting you as the operator on any emergency occurrences that require immediate attention.
4.5. Drive Mechanism
The drive mechanism in a labeling machine can be categorized in three main elements:
- Motor
- Conveyor
- Roller system.
The motor system is ideally what powers the machine to function accordingly. The motor system converts electrical energy into mechanical energy – different types of motions.
So basically, we can say that the motor system is the heart of the machine. This is because the configuration of all the electrical and mechanical systems starts from it.
The conveyor system is primarily the mechanism that helps in the movement of containers and labels from one point of the machine to another.
It consists of different wheels and belts that run simultaneously to deliver systematic labeling results on the respective containers.
You can see that in the video below:
Then we have the roller system. This is a combination of different rollers that generally assist in the entire machine to move various components, and placing them in the right positions.
Rollers are connected with conveyors and motors where they obtain their motion from.
4.6. Plate for Putting Labels
This component is also vital in a labeling machine. It is merely used in placing the labels so that they can be picked and printed on the surface of the container.
Labeling machine has a system that ensures the labels are picked automatically from this spot. They are then printed on the surface of a container.

Figure 19
The plates can be numerous depending on a particular machine that you are using for applying labels on the bottle.
4.7. Discharge Mechanism
During the labeling of containers, there is the possibility of some labels to be erroneously printed on the surface of the product.
They have a well-configured discharge mechanism and enhanced accuracy levels. This helps to detect tags which is essential in preventing label offset.

Figure 20
Remember this is in conjunction with the configuration of brake function that ultimately enhances the tag detection.
4.8 Automated System
Apparently, almost every element of an ultramodern labeling machine is automated. It thus means that you require a proper understanding of how the parts function.
This will help you to make the right decision during the labeling process.
It is the automated system that ensures proper coordination of various functions of a labeling machine. The system ensures every part moves to perform its specific task.
Of course, it uses programs installed in the PLC system to operate the industrial labeling machine.

Figure 21 – PLC System by Siemens
The automated system in most of these machines is operated from the control panel, which provides an interface for all these components. They are mainly HMI touchscreen panels.
4.9. Rejection Unit
This component is considerably essential when it comes to labeling machines. Typically, errors occurring during the process are inevitable.
Nonetheless, it would be difficult to manually detect errors during the process. It is even hectic when you’re dealing with high speed labeling machines.
So for efficiency, the machine comes with a rejection unit that ensures all labels with errors are sidelined. This is a process that happens automatically, and rejection is on the basis of all types of labeling errors.
4.10. Safety System
One of the essential elements to consider when using any machine for that matter is safety.
And for that reason, it would be essential to ensure that you understand all the safety aspects revolving around operating the machine.
The machine, however, comes with emergency buttons that placed in open areas for easy accessibility in the event of emergencies.

Figure 22
They are installed in such a manner that the power supply to the machine is cut off upon pressing the emergency button.
This is imperative because it makes it possible for you to prevent any further damage or mess from happening during such emergencies.
Also, electrical wires are insulated and they are enclosed in a lockable box.
But, that alone is not enough.
Interlocking certain processes is also another safety measure. For example, the label will move only when there are containers or items on the conveyor system.
Alternatively, you cannot power on the machine when electrical box is open. There are quite a number of safety measures that help protect both the labeling machine and technicians.
Also, the design of the machine aims to ensure safety. For instance, all moving parts are completely isolated to prevent possible injury.
Now with these, I am sure we can now have a quick overview of the working principle of a labeling machine.
Labeling Machine Working Principle

In this section, I am going to show you how a labeling machine works. The process is not something that is complicated.
You see – it is important to know how a labeling machine works equipment works.
Anyway, here is a video that shows how a bottle labeling machine works.
As I have mentioned in chapter 4, all these parts play an important role in the working principle of this type of machine. In fact, the process starts right away from the feeding hopper all through the final stages.
Step 1: Feeding Items into the Machine
The containers or items are fed and moved by an independently driven conveyor belt. At the same time, the labeling system begins to move at a continuous feed rate.
Normally the container or items feeding system is synchronized with that of the labeling system. Again, some mechanical fixtures are incorporated between the boxes at some fixed distance apart.

Figure 23
They push the box along the conveyor direction. Of course, the machine uses a label round, driving wheel and reel.
Step 2: Containers move to Label Distribution Area
The containers, then move to the label distribution area conveyed using an in-feed scroll. It offers correct spacing among the containers.
The essence here is to allow for the application of the label.

Figure 24
In this case, the wheel drag tags with alternating movement as the label are brought out from the reel. At the same time, it causes pressure for subsequent labeling that is in the labeling boxes.
A brushless motor drives label dispensing and application which allows for automatic synchronization of with the speed of container transport.
At the same time, the backing paper recovery support provides the dispensing unit with high capacity controlled by a mechanical system. This is important as it makes it possible for regular paper tensioning.
It is important to understand that during the labeling process, the band has to continue starting and stopping tags. Therefore, the reel has to be used in the open-loop displacement control.

Figure 25
This helps in maintaining the label given that the label with the tension which is put on the label tends to be linked closely to one another.
Now, the label box contains a labeling speed wheel which under similar circumstances, will be posted on the box.
The moment the box gets to a specific point, the label with a driving wheel and conveyor accelerates. The essence is to equalize the speed, label and after that decelerates to a stop.
The conveyor belt on the upper section of the machine keeps the containers in position during labeling to ensure high accuracy in label application.
Of course, the possibilities of labels sliding are inevitable. So the machine has registered the above signs to make sure that each label is accurately placed.
The machine also has different elements that help in monitoring its status in real time production, labeling, intervention and other safety aspects.
Step 2: Ejecting Labeled Containers
Once the machine labels the containers appropriately, they leave via the discharge chute.
The sensor is available in this machine and plays the role of determining any erroneous label. So in the deceleration phase, the driving wheel will always adjust to the ideal position and align the label accordingly.

Figure 26
It is equipped with a safety mechanism for fallen bottles, an alarm and machine stop at the control panel.
As you can see, the working principle of this machine is quite intensive. But with that brief overview, we can now look at the specification and design of the label application machine.
Label Application Machine Specification and Design

We have different designs and specifications for label application machines. Therefore, you must be keen to choose a machine that meets your unique specifications.
The truth is:
You must go through the technical manual of these labeling machines. With this information, you’ll get a machine that will enhance your productivity.
So, I will take you to the main subject of this section.
I want us to look at the two significant specifications and design of label application machines.
Without any doubt, some of these designs and specifications vary from one machine to another one. And this will depend on many factors such as production capacity, functionality, technology, etc.
Of course, those are just a few aspects to consider. Anyway, let’s go straight into our main discussion here:
6.1. 3D and Technical Drawing of Labeling Machine
There is a need for label application machines to have a clamping mechanism which allows for correct placement of labels.
You’ll notice that most of the conventional labeling equipment have features allowing them to hold containers and packaging firmly while applying the label.
So most labeling machines use set customized aligning jaws that are of a similar exact spot all the time. But this seems tedious, expensive and time-consuming approach to labeling products.
In short, these machines come in different designs, shapes, configurations and sizes. You’ll see all these by analyzing both the technical drawing and 3d drawing of the labeling machine.

Figure 27 – A 3D drawing of a labeling machine

Figure 28 – Technical Drawing of the above labeling machine
Why am I showing you all these?
It is these drawings that determine the final design and structure of any labeling machine. So, you need an in-depth understanding of these drawings to know the labeling machine you’ll purchase.
You will find all these in the technical manual of the machine.
Apart from this, another important aspect you need to know is the technical specifications.
6.2. Technical Specifications of Label Printing Machine
This is the other significant aspect of labeling machines that we also want to look at. Ideally, these specifications vary from one machine to the other depending on the specific model.
But to say the least, we have some general technical specifications that you should expect any particular labeling equipment to contain.
This type of machine should necessarily be a narrow web flexo press that can print some:
- Labels
- Tags
- Stickers
- Cartons and,
- Flexible packaging among others.
Nonetheless, a label applicator must have rigid construction. This is vital because of three primary reasons.
- It provides the necessary durability; so it is worthy if it serves you for the considerably longer duration.
- Rigid construction gives the machine stability, which is important when operating it, especially in a busy environment. This is a sure way of enhancing safety when using this equipment.
- Offers the machine with versatility and reliability essential for carrying out some of the notably tricky tasks.
Furthermore, the construction of this machine provides a rather superior foundation that guarantees and enhances quality labeling and converting.
To create rigid and solid structures, this type of machine should have full dual side frames.
These frames are essential since they can support some of the structures that are unattainable with partial frames, which merely get support from sheet metal legs.
What’s more?
Loading and unloading of this unit should be simple and the control panel needs to be user-friendly.
Other standard technical specifications that an ideal labeling machine should have include automatic web guidance and electronic control web tension.
Moreover, it should have a flexible die type and digital control motor drives. It should also have the ability to set the speed even when it’s in running the operation.
And, more importantly, know the production capacity, size, accuracy, etc. You will get all these in the technical manual – have a look at this:

Figure 29 – Technical specification of labeling machine
To say the least:
Knowing technical specifications play an integral role when it comes to selecting a particular labeling machine.
So you have to be specific depending on what you need and what you’re sure will make it possible for you to solve your labeling needs.
And moving on swiftly, I’m certain that all along you’ve been waiting to know the ideal labeling machines to buy.
Straightaway, let’s get to see some of them in the next chapter that you may consider choosing;
